If I move my photos, and music, (like you did) to the external drive, will the Music and Photo apps automatically locate the files? What about when I add in new photos and music? Question, how do you do that? I looked at Migration Assistant but it seems like the wrong thing to transfer some stuff, (but not everything ) from one drive to another. I have a standard 2TB drive for Time Machine back up, and a new 1TB SSD drive to store stuff and make space on the iMac internal drive. I will now clear out old apps and other unused things that are just taking up space on the internal drive. I successfully transferred the information from my Time Machine back up of my dead 2010 iMac into the new iMac. I got the 27" iMac with the 500GB SSD drive. One is a Time Machine backup and the other is a bootable clone backup done with Carbon Copy Clone. † - example: I have two backup drive on my primary iMac. You MUST have one, preferably two, independent local backups† in case the logic board has to be replaced or you will lose everything. If something happens to the logic board, you cannot remove the drive to recover data. NOTE: with new iMacs, the SSD is no longer socketed but instead integral with the logic board. You need to look at your usage pattens but, based on grousing seen here about 256GB drives that are filling up, I cannot recommend less than 500GB. Current options for factory SSDs in iMacs are now cheaper than they were when I bought mine in late 2018. #2tb internal hard drive for imac macI do not use less than 500GB SSDs in my backup notebook Mac because I use then to store digital images while on the road. SSDs are still more expensive per GB than mechanical hard drives. The only thing the comes to mind is cost per GB of storage. You will have to ask Apple we are your fellow end users. Why did my eleven year old iMac have a 500 GB hard drive, while the 2021 iMac has a 256 GB hard drive? WiFi was never intended to move large amounts of data at one time. As long as you kept the security keys for installing their apps, it is not a big deal.įinally, NEVER EVER use WiFi to migrate, this will fail in almost 100% of the situations in my experience. #2tb internal hard drive for imac professionalSome professional apps such as Adobe and Microsoft apps may require re-installing their apps as they will not allow them to be migrated. #2tb internal hard drive for imac mac osThe ONLY difference between MA and SA is MA will create a new user account that you need to log into.īoth SA and MA migrate applications (not 32 bit apps), data files, settings, it does not migrate Mac OS itself. ![]() If you have already done SA on the new computer then simply connect the Time Machine External Hard Disk using a USB cable and launch Migration Assistant (MA) which is located in Applications - Utilities - MA. ![]() When you start the new Mac for the first time it will startup Setup Assistant (SA), SA will get to a point where it asks if you are migrating from another computer, select Yes and follow the on-screen prompts and it's done! It is THAT simple. When you buy a new Mac the easiest, quickest and most reliable method is to simply connect the old Mac's Time Machine External Hard Disk to the new Mac using a USB cable before you turn on the new Mac. When the new iMac (with the 1TB SSD) then follow the instructions below: ![]() For most users 1TB tends to be the sweet spot. I would return it and buy one with a 1TB SSD. Maybe store it on my external drives? Thanks for your input. If I do return the iMac, larger hard drive options areĭo I need to rethink my storage of photos and music on the new iMac. So again, do I need to pick and choose what I transfer? Why did my eleven year old iMac have a 500 GB hard drive, while the 2021 iMac has a 256 GB hard drive? The external drive I used to run my 2010 iMac, is 1.5 TB with 1.17 TB space available, so I guess about 330 GB was used, but I think 45 to 50 percent is applications. So the question is, Is the new 2021 iMac 256 GB SSD internal hard drive large enough? Did I do the transfer wrong? Or did I get the wrong hard drive and need to return the iMac and do an upgrade? #2tb internal hard drive for imac manualsOnce I did the transfer, I dumped a lot audiobooks, manuals and other things I had picked up over the years. (It comes with a 256 GB SSD drive) I had to NOT transfer my iMovies, desktop, and other things to make it fit. But the new iMac says it does not have enough space. The new 21.5 inch iMac arrives yesterday and I think easy, just take the last Time Machine back up, and transfer it to the new iMac. Earlier the internal 500 GB Sata hard drive had died, so I was running it off an external1.5 TB hard drive, with a second 1TB external hard drive for my Time Machine back up, and a third drive (2TB) as a 2nd Time Machine backup. ![]()
